Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hi Friends and Happy Wednesday!  I am joining Joyce once again for her link up..let's answer her fun questions...

1. What does it mean to have the 'holiday spirit'? On a scale of 1-10 how is yours this year? (10=off the charts, 1=still looking for it)

I think holiday spirit is feeling the joy and hope of the birth of Christ.  I think the materialism in this day and age can really affect your spirit and I struggle with that every year...the pressure...the lists...it gets to be too much.  I like practicing traditions for my family and friends and that brings me JOY...but the shopping/materialism really does get to me.  So as far as my holiday spirit, it is a work in progress.  Right now I would say I am at a 5?

2. What's your favorite character from a (December) holiday-themed movie, book, or TV special? Tell us why.

Clark Griswold by far.  Christmas Vacation is one of my favorite movies of all time and I LOVE Clark and his grandiose plans...I often say I am the female Clark Griswold and my family agrees ;)

3. Do you like gingerbread? Are gingerbread houses part of your holiday tradition?

Love gingerbread.  Gingerbread houses are not really part of our traditions.  I do love to grab one Gingerbread Muffin this time of year from Gingerbread Construction Company- a local and festive shop to our area!

4. Much of our vocabulary is determined by where we live or where we grew up. What say you-

sprinkles or jimmies? lightning bugs or fireflies? soda or pop? sneakers, trainers, or tennis shoes? sub, hoagie, grinder, or hero? freeway, highway, or motorway? frosting or icing? sauce or gravy?

For sure!  Jimmies- Fireflies- Soda/Tonic in New England actually- Sneakers- Subs- Highway- Frosting and Sauce for everything BUT Gravy for the Sunday Pasta Sauce! :)

5. Share a favorite holiday memory from your childhood.

Christmas Eve...The Feast of the Seven Fishes with our family...church services...the magic of that night (pictures above are from Christmas Eve in more recent years)

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

Tis' the Season- trying to enjoy it- not get too stressed- work in progress...

This was fun to read- the female Griswold- love it! Also I agree so much with your answer to question 1- I would say mine is a work in progress as well. That gingerbread muffin looks divine! The Christmas Eve pictures are so good- you guys have wonderful traditions. Have a great day!

The pressure is too much at this time of year, I am scaling back on things this year so I am feeling quite festive at the moment.
For years my girls used to make gingerbread houses, it was a lovely but messy tradition.
Your Christmas Eve memories did make me smile.

We hold it all together for our families and sometimes you can truly feel that pressure!

Good for you Kim! I am making a conscious effort to do the same!

I knew I could count on someone with Italian heritage to say gravy for the Sunday sauce : ) I grew up in the northeast and you hear it a lot more there than you do here in the south. I wish we didn't have to battle the consumerism that tries to take over this time of year. I think we all want simple but it's tricky to make that happen. I still try though. I'm also finding just focusing on the day in front of me helps too. When I look at the calendar as a whole I can feel a little anxiety about what all is happening between now and the end of the year. Enjoy your family and all your traditions!

What a fun post... I love reading about your favorite family tradition and the geographic vocab was fun, too! And, I couldn't agree more... holding on to the true reason for the season in the midst of everything going on is what it's all about! Happy December!

That gingerbread muffin looks amazing! I am not at all surprised to hear that you refer to red sauce as gravy; even around here many call it their "Sunday gravy." We are pretty lucky in that we don't really have to battle the consumerism much for Christmas- our boys never asked for much and we don't really buy for many people at all despite both having large families. We did a lot more when all the kids including the nieces and nephews were little. But it has definitely simplified itself in recent years.

If you are ever in the Greater Boston area, you need to grab one of those muffins- they have two locations- Winchester MA and Lynnfield MA- you won't regret it :)

Thanks so much for your candid response to the question about the holiday spirit. When I saw Joyce's question, I was immediately reminded of Tom Lehrer's Christmas Carol. Of course, it isn't supposed to be that way, but Lehrer is spot on that most people value money over gratitude and grace.

We watched Christmas Vacation over the break and it's such a classic. I agree about holiday spirit vs. materialism. The struggle is real!

Clark is the greatest :)

I have been reading so so much on all the (somewhat new) positives associated with HRT-- and might just start on it myself this spring when I next see my doctor (I'm not 100% sure yet). I'm currently wearing a glucose monitor to help me keep my sugar consumption to a minimum and seeing how various food combinations affect my my blood sugar levels. Your foods look so yummy! That senior superlative cracked me up! Glad Diana can laugh at herself. We're getting a bit of snow today but I'm hoping it stops soon..

Isn't Clark the best? Ha!! Totally agree Kim :)
