Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hi Friends!  I am here for Joyce  and her fun linkup!  Let's answer her fun questions...

1. June 17th, 1994 was the day of the infamous O.J. Simpson car chase. What were you doing in 1994? I'm guessing somebody is going to tell me they weren't born yet but that's part of the fun of the Hodgepodge. Lots of generations are represented here.

Oh I was at work!  We all tuned into the tv to watch some of the chase.  When I got home, I continued to watch the coverage with my dad.  I will never forget it!  We were totally sucked in!

2. What's your favorite summer salad that isn't the traditional tossed green lettuce kind of salad? Do you like fresh fruit in a salad (other than in a fruit salad of course)?

I love hearty salads that have different and interesting ingredients that make it exciting!  I do love fruit in salad sometimes and I think a good corn salad would probably be a summer fave.  In addition to corn salads, here is one of my all time favorite summer salads.  Recipe HERE

3. Is chivalry dead? Should it be?

No I don't think so...you can still find it when you least expect it and no!  It should not be dead!  I am very traditional :)

4. Would you rather spend a week of your summer vacation in Hawaii or Alaska? Have you ever been to either? Are they two places you really would like to see? How do you feel about 'Hawaiian pizza' aka pineapple on a pizza? Have you ever eaten Baked Alaska?

Hawaii of course!  Have been to neither location.  I would really want to see Hawaii.  I could take or leave Alaska.  I prefer warm and tropical destinations for the most part.  I do like Hawaiin pizza on occasion.  Baked Alaska?  Yes!  I think it is so delish!

5. World Cup play is happening now...are you interested? Watching any matches? Did you or your children play soccer/futbol? There are eleven US cities hosting matches-

-Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York with the stadium in NJ, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle

along with  three cities in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey)
and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver)-

You get free tickets to one of these matches. Which city do you choose? Tell us why.

I would choose Boston since it is our hometown!  We are somewhat interested and will turn on an occasional game. My brother played soccer growing up and I was always at his games.  My dad coached him for a few years too- those were fun years!  My girls each played for a bit.  Eva loved it.  Diana hated it.  Shocker ;)

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Well I am hoping to turn this one around on YOU.  Please comment with your best college move-in tips and any packing tips or items you would suggest!  Thanks In Advance :)

Ohh! That Barley and Corn Salad does look good!
I know if I went to Alaska I would complain about it being too cold. lol It would have to be Hawaii for me.
I have no tips for moving into college, I never did it and neither have my girls but I just wanted to say I hope it all goes well.

College move in - freshman year at least - student helpers literally unloaded our car into these giant wheeling basket things in a split second. We didn't have to do a thing. The baskets got elevatored up to the dorm and then our kids were basically like "I've got it from here". Now, girls will be different. Manage your expectations, though, and let her lead the way. She may not know how she feels until it's happening. I thought we would go to lunch. I thought we would unpack. I left feeling disappointed, but it wasn't about me, I realized. I would be as minimal as possible and plan to go to a nearby Walmart or Target for the finishing touches. You need way less than you think and so many items mine took came home at the end of the year unopened. The dorms usually have a vacuum. There are so many touches now in dorms that we didn't have.

Donnie has a packing list for college pdf. I can send it to you if he still has it (I'm almost certain he does). Agree with your answer to question 3! I need to look up what baked Alaska is. The name is funny...

Oh college packing tips! I have many-- keep like stuff together as it makes unpacking easier when everyone has their "zone." Use labels! Most colleges ask that all bins/totes/ single items be labeled with name, dorm building/room number etc. But I also labeled things like "bedding" "desk" "clothes" etc. to make it easy to find whatever we were looking for. But as far as what to pack? That varies hugely by person. Alec LOVED his bedside caddy and a few other "essentials" but Evan rolled his eyes at every single one of them and refused my offer to buy them for him. He may change his mind once he's there but that's another thing to remember-- she's not that far from home that you can't bring her something she wishes she had brought plus Amazon is always there and delivers on the daily to all colleges so really try not to sweat it. As long as you remember the big stuff like bedding, towels, clothes, a laptop, etc. I invested more in the storage aspect of dorming since I knew space would be a problem. So things like magnetic pockets/bins that attach to the mini fridge, an over the door storage hanging container. I am posting Evan's dorm buys with a link to Alec's stuff on Monday. But it's funny how different their lists are... and that Alec just keeps adding more and more stuff year after year when I was assured his list would get smaller.

My college move in advice? Hydrate lol. It's a long, exhausting day and in our case (my girls went to uni in SC) it was always 1000 degrees. Everyone is emotional so there's lots of happy scary nerves all around. Some schools have helpers for unloading your stuff and that is much appreciated. I think organizing items in bins with lids and maybe having a dolly to help with moving the bins from the car to the dorm helps. We had stairs to navigate but it did cut down on trips to/from the car. Does your daughter know her roommate? Your salad sounds delish. So many yummy summer salads out there. I need to try some different recipes this season. Have a great day!

College move in - it can definitely be hot and stressful. We loved using the Ikea bags (now available on Amazon). They hold so much and pack up really well (better than boxes) in the car. And remember it's ok to wait to buy things til you get there like toiletries etc.
