Wednesday Hodgepodge

From this Side of the Pond

Hi Friends!  Happy Hodgepodge Day!  I am joining Joyce once again and answering her fun questions...so here we go....

1. April 22nd is Earth Day...what's the most 'out of this world' place on earth you've ever visited? Tell us something about it.

I would say Italy.  In Rome, it was about the beautiful architecture- the out-of-this-world food and the wonderful people.

Once we got to Sorrento, it was about the gorgeous coast- our incredible visits to the islands of Amalfi and Capri and the fun and local shopping. Oh yeah and our pizza-making excursion in the hills of Sorrento at a private home-will never forget it and hope to return to Italy again in the future.

2. A favorite quote, verse, or song lyric with the word earth in it?

Earth Angel- 1954 by The Penguins

A classic doo wop song that I love!

"Earth angel, earth angel
Will you be mine?
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you
Earth angel, earth angel
The one I adore
Love you forever and ever more
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you
I fell for you and I knew
The vision of your love, loveliness
I hope and I pray that someday
I'll be the vision of your hap-happiness, oh, oh
Earth angel, earth angel
Please, be mine
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you
I fell for you and I knew
The vision of your loveliness
I hope and pray that someday
That I'll be the vision of your happiness, oh
Earth angel, earth angel
Please, be mine
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you (you, you, you)"

3. What's the most trivial thing about which you have a strong opinion?

Oh this is a fun question.  I guess so many things like my Herbalife Tea Flavors and Flavor Combos.  Fashion.  Music.  Flowers.  My little joys but I feel very strongly about these things- one way or another for sure!

4. What's your most commonly used kitchen utensil or tool? What's the last thing you made using that tool?

It is a wooden spatula and I use it most nights to make dinner- just used it on Thursday night to make a tomato risotto that I served aside Air Fryer Chicken Cutlets.

5. Marilyn (Memphis Bridges) gave me a great book of 3000 questions, and I'm going to try to use one in our Hodgepodge every week. Here is today's -

What is your greatest extravagance?

Our Cleaning Lady

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Senior Assassins

Have you heard of this game?  The WHS Assassins Game starts right after April Vacation.  We are bracing for it.  I can tell Diana is nervous but also excited to play it.

According to Chatgpt, this is the best way to describe this game:

The “Senior Assassin” game (sometimes called Senior Water Wars or Senior Tag) is an informal, student-run game that many U.S. high school seniors play toward the end of the school year.

Here’s the basic idea:

🎯 How it works

  • Each player is secretly assigned another student as their “target.”
  • Your goal is to “eliminate” your target—usually by spraying them with a water gun (or sometimes a water balloon).
  • At the same time, someone else is assigned to eliminate you, so you’re both hunter and hunted.
  • When you eliminate your target, you take over their target.
  • The game continues until only one person is left.

⏱️ When and where it’s played

  • Usually happens in the spring of senior year, right before graduation.
  • It’s not a school-sponsored activity and typically can’t be played on school grounds.

📋 Common rules

Rules vary by school, but often include:

  • Only use water guns (no realistic-looking weapons)
  • Safe zones like school, work, or homes
  • No trespassing or unsafe behavior
  • Proof of elimination (photo or video)

💰 Why people play

  • Sometimes there’s a cash prize from entry fees
  • Mostly it’s for fun, competition, and senior-year memories

⚠️ Why it gets attention

Even though it’s meant to be harmless, police and schools sometimes warn about it because:

  • People may mistake water guns for real weapons
  • Players might trespass or act suspiciously
  • There have been accidents or risky behavior tied to the game

 Wish us luck! :)

Great pictures of Italy! I remember reading about your trip- it sounded incredible. We have been "warned" about senior assassins, lol. I hope that Diana has a great time with it!

I have not heard of the game but it for sure would have stressed me out as a teenager. Hope everyone has fun with it. Your Italy pics are gorgeous and make me long for another trip too. We were supposed to go this spring but with all we have going on here currently I'm sort of relieved it was cancelled. Someday we'll get back there. Have a great day Holly!

All of Italy looks beautiful with the architectural beauty. Europe is so beautiful in this way! The song Earth Angel makes me think of the movie "Back to the Future"! Oh my, yes, that game would stress me and my daughter out I think, but I hope they all have fun!

Your school has the best senior traditions!!! And yes, I can totally see that Italy is an "out of this world" place. Like you, I can't wait to go back there someday!

I had never heard of assassins before but they played a game of it on the show Greek and it looked like a lot of fun. That would totally stress me out to play but it still sounds like fun.

I ALSO said Earth Angel!! That's funny. We're trying to go to Italy next year, since my sister in law has family there and they want to go.

The senior game was not a thing when my kids graduated, but now it is very popular in our area!

Tanya- I learned about it when my stepson was a senior back in 2013 if you can believe it! I remember him playing- having a daughter now who will be playing will be very interesting :)
