Fun Filled February Weekend!

After crashing early on Friday night, the rest of the weekend was complete with business and much fun!

Ally and I studies at The Village Bean and grabbed some sushi for lunch..we then surprised her by picking up Aaron and they got to spend some quality time together

Monkey, Daddy and I headed over to Elisa's on Saturday night, where her and her hubby Manny served us a stellar meal...they went ALL OUT...shrimp cocktail, stuffed mushrooms, eggplant rolitini (and that was just the apps)...dinner was prime rib, pork crown roast, stuffing, potatoes, corn, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, salad and focaccia bread and dessert was fresh pineapple and strawberries drizzled with Galliano...UNREAL...Diana tried shrimp for the first time and LOVED it..we were a little worried that she may be allergic but she could not get enough and it seemed to work...she was bragging about how much fish she ate after ;)

We had some great laughs...(oh yeah and some great wine!) Here are a few pix...

Today was Diana's little Valentine Swaree for some of her closest pals from dance and/or town...sugar sugar sugar...well not just sugar...I tried to include some healthy snacks too...here is what I did (I am kinda proud of what I put on today)

Diana's Dance Update

Have I become a Dance Mom? Well sort of...but not like the crazy ones we watch on T.V...those biznatches that I just cannot turn off...in fact I wait all week for Tuesdays at 9pm...I admit it

Not like them at all right?

TOO FUNNY!

Anyway, today was Diana's first day of tap. Her class each week will now consist of half tap and half ballet- just precious! Here is Diana and a few of her pals all excited and ready to tap!

and Diana was so excited when she realized "Miss Erica", the owner of Happy Feet was in the office today! She proceeded to lift her leg up onto the counter to show Miss Erica her new tap shoes- hysterical (here she is with her #1 accomplice Claire ;)

Dance class went GREAT...it really seemed like the girls enjoyed tapping and they surprisingly did not get out of control!

At the end of class, the girls were allowed to try on their recital costumes so the teachers could check out any anticipated alterations...they are fairies doing the song Rainbow Bridge..the moms LOVED the costumes...so girlie...so beautiful

Superbowl Sunday!

I need to preface this post by writing that we are all disappointed in the outcome of the game (around here anyway). The Patriots let us down and although the game was very exciting, it was a true heart breaker in the end. Nevertheless, we had one of our most fun superbowls ever!

We started by having lunch over at Grammy and Papa's- they went all out...chicken wings...boneless pork...greek salad...chili....and so much more!

After lunch we went home for a nap (well I napped while my awesome hubby entertained the Monk)...

After my nap, I finished preparing the treats we were bringing to our friends for the game

and then we headed over to our friends' the Cooneys...and had a great time

(They even made arrangements for their daughter Colleen to babysit Diana next door with some little friends- Diana had a BLAST and didn't even look back at us once when Colleen walked her next door- unreal!)

for the opportunity to watch Zach place high school sports...the years are winding down and I have loved watching every minute

for the ability to help Ally with her studies and pray that my help will only help her to grow and be the best she can be

for quality family time especially being able to watch Kayla in a theatrical performance...nothing can replace passion

for 33k...weekly spread...record numbers being hit...

for working out...and for a partner who is the greatest coach

Saturday Night we had a blast...first we grabbed Mexican at an authentic hot spot in Salem, MA called The Howling Wolf Taqueria...here the kiddos are with their Mexican sodas

I LOVE Cam...isn't he a stud with his hair do? He is a true lady killer and I love seeing him at Diana's dance classes each week (he waits for his big sis Emma)

My friend from town Mike Joanis just announced he is running for school board and we are thrilled! (Rob took some family photos for him yesterday!)

We started teaching Diana the alphabet...not just each letter but what sounds each letter make and what words begin with each letter...I have to say my Mom is an awesome teacher!! She really made the most progress with Diana this week :)

Awaken The Night

There is a band called Sub 7 and The Undead and they wrote a show called Awaken The Night. The show is built around their music that tells a haunting story about vampires.

My stepdaughter Kayla told us she was getting involved in the production and we encouraged her because we are musical theater buffs....well my hubby is the music buff and I the theater buff and together we appreciate and have passion or music and theater.

To make a long story short and a small world smaller...while chatting in my office one day..I discovered that one of my employees was also in the show. (The reason she is working for us started back with a theatrical production as she was our choreographer in Windham on Broadway last year)...so "Jack Attack" and "Kay" met each other through this production and we finally got to enjoy it this Saturday night.

Here are some awesome pix that Rob captured. (Keep in mind that this show had the perfect backdrop as the group performed it in a small theater in Salem, MA right across the street from one of the famous witch museums...so appropriate! so artistic)

Quick Bolognese Sauce

Last night was cheat night and since yesterday was a snowy day, when we got lots done around the house, I promised my hubby and little girl, a quiet and cozy night at home with a stellar homemade meal.

The centerpiece? Homemade bolognese sauce. I didn't have 2-3 hours to simmer a traditional sauce but I found this awesome "quick sauce" recipe and it came out fantastic.

What is Bolognese you ask?

Bolognese sauce (Italian: ragù alla bolognese) is a meat-based sauce for pasta originating in Bologna, Italy. It is traditionally used to dress tagliatelle and is one of the two sauces used to prepare "lasagne alla Bolognese". Bolognese sauce is sometimes taken to be a tomato sauce, but many recipes have only a small amount of tomato concentrate.

I also read once that bolognese is "not a tomato sauce with meat in it BUT a meat sauce with tomatoes in it" Excellent description

What I loved about making the sauce the most? Rob and Diana were milling around and Under The Tuscan Sun was on at the same time (how appropriate?).....After dinner, we settled in to watch Toy Story and as I looked around....all three of us were snuggled on the couch and I asked Rob "does it get any better than this?" He said, "no...this is the jackpot." Amen

Here is the recipe I used (it got 5 stars from my fam)

Ingredients

1 1/2 pound(s) ground meat for meat loaf (beef, pork, and veal)
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large stalk celery, chopped
1 large carrot, shredded
1/4 cup(s) tomato paste
1/2 cup(s) dry red wine
1 can(s) (28 ounces) whole tomatoes in puree
Salt and ground black pepper
1/2 cup(s) whole milk

Heat 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven over high heat until hot. Add ground meat, onion, celery, and carrot, and cook 10 minutes or until meat is no longer pink, breaking up meat with side of spoon. Drain off fat. Stir in tomato paste; cook 2 minutes.
Add red wine and cook 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; heat to boiling, breaking up tomatoes with side of spoon. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Stir milk into sauce; cover and simmer 5 minutes. Use half of sauce to toss with 1 pound pasta, cooked, for 6 main-dish servings. If you like, spoon remaining sauce into freezer-weight storage containers and freeze up to 3 months

For having a boss...the owner of my firm...that likes to keep us moving forward, thinking big picture and taking us to the next level...it is so nice and refreshing to work for someone who wants to continue to invest in me and help me grow...so so grateful

Dear Diana (at almost 3 and a half!)

Dear Diana,

You are almost three and a half but you are telling everyone that you are 5! (hysterical). Why do we think you are picking the number 5? It is because Daddy told you that you could have gum and "earrins" as you call them when you turn 5. So now you are trying to convince everyone including yourself that you are already there!

I have been thinking alot about how fast time flies and how quickly things change. I remember when Daddy had you on his lap when you were only a month and two months and three months old...and he would sing "Can't Touch This" and move your little chubby legs all around like you were dancing like MC Hammer...we would all laugh and you loved it...as you won't remember, you were quite sick and cried most of the time but that was one of the special times when you stayed so quiet and looked so happy and peaceful and out of pain!

More recently, I remember that every time we got in the car and strapped you into your car seat, you would immediately take your shoes off and your socks and do sock puppets like Ally taught you. It was so annoying every time we got to our destination because I would have to put both socks and both shoes back on before getting you out of your seat and yet now, I wish just once, you would do it again...funny how that happens.

I flash back to the night Mimi and Papa saw you in the exercauser for the fist time. All I did was plop you in there and I thought they were going to die...they laughed so hard and squealed like you had just written the next constitution. I also remember the hours of joy that the exercauser brought you ad the time it gave me to get my job done from home and a true gift that I never took for granted.

Now you like to say "remember when I was a little tiny baby....." and I say "yes" and you say things like "I liked Elmo"....and "I was scared of "Dumpty" aka Humpty Dumpty" It kills me...it is like you are 35 talking about when you were 1...ha ha!!!

You are such a girl. You are still obsessed with lip gloss "pink" and nail polish and makeup, jewelry, matching accessories...Strawberry Shortcake...Hello Kitty...Angelina Balerina...Dora...Olivia...and shoes shoes shoes!!! You even want to change one million times a day...you love putting on different outfits (especially comfy stretchies) and then adding boots and bows and makeup oh my!

"Our" new favorite movie is Ramona and Beezus. Thanks to you, I am completely addicted- it has become my new favorite movie and we often watch it together on Friday nights before you go to bed.

You have done wonderful with potty training but our next step is to be able to go without a pull up over night and keep your bed dry...next obstacle/next challenge/we will get there...eventually?

You still like your good old stand bys like chicken nuggets, mac and cheese and grilled cheese but you have been much better about trying new things and as a result, you are a big fan of salad and all kinds of fruit now.

For music, you have become a fan of Adelle "Madell", Lady Gaga and Rianna although you also think the name for a woman's private part is also Rianna...I can't even think about that without giggling uncontrollably.

Your best pal from school, Maxwell, is no longer with you and that has been a sad thing for you to go through recently. Maxwell was a big part of your security there and you still talk about him every day. We are going to try and set up some play dates because he was such a special friend of yours.

You have declared, however, that you want to go to arestaurant and take all of your friends for dinner...Daddy asked, "who is coming" and you proceeded to list your friends and family: Maxwell, Alexis....Alice....Uncle Matt...Gina.....and then Daddy said "your caris not big enough" and you replied...""I am going to drive Mama's car"....so flippin cute.

You asked me the other day, "When I get bigger, can be a boss?" My reply? "You already are."

Ogunquit in the Winter...

So...we needed a weekend away...just the two of us...I always want to be on the ocean or at least near it and so we chose Ogunquit.

We felt like two teenagers that were sneaking off together.

We started with a VERY cold brisk walk on the beach...even though we were numb after, there is nothing that brings me more peace than the ocean

As soon as we checked in, we proceeded to fill the hot tub RIGHT IN OUR Room....Yes...right in our room..and that was not all!

There was a gas fireplace above the hot tub...I kid you not...it was just fantab

We enjoyed some champagne and relaxation while watching a Friends marathon (pure bliss)

and I just had to capture the bed...LOVED the bedding..

Later on, we headed out for a romantic and fun dinner at Five 0 on Shore Road

It was a funky little hot spot and we enjoyed our choices

We started with a trio of tapas- marinated olives with roasted garlic, roasted red peppers on little toasts and gorgonzola stuffed dates wrapped in proscuitto. For dinner, we both picked the flounder special which was herb stuffed and served over a red pepper risotto...very good! Dessert? Too good to even write about -chocolate cinnamon creme brulee and flourless chocolate torte...could only take a few bites (yes it was my cheat day!)

After dinner it was time for the PATS and more hot tub time for me! Relaxing and romantic night away :)

A tough week as Daddy was away on business for most of it...but we made it through with plenty of quality fam time, laughs and good meals!

On Friday night, before Daddy left, Mimi and I went into Boston to pick out Diana's pictures for her composite card- yes I am that crazy to try and capture some Boston Brownstones while driving...not smart and as my mother would call me "a real geek" ha ha!

The next morning I took Daddy to the airport...came home and Diana immediately asked for her "pink" aka lip gloss

My poor Bud Zach suffered through conjunctivitis so we took extra special care of him

and then we tracked Daddy's flights of course (I usually have three websites up at once!) Flight Aware is my fave though

Later on it was time for Miss Fiona's birthday party (she is one of Diana's dance pals)

and later on, two nice suprises

First, Kayla came over for a visit :)

and then BFF Cass and Alexis suggested a girls' night...we went to Rainforest Cafe..the girls were thrilled and off the wall of course ;)

Sunday was a good day to get the chores done and get organized for the week but not before some cozy time with movies and a quick girls trip to Orange Leaf in Andover for Fro Yo...since I started my new regime, I made sure mine was fat free, sugar free and topped with awesome fruit...delish

Found another guilty pleasure Sunday night..."Dance Moms"..ugh...they make me sick but it is like a train wreck...I couldn't stop watching...on a more positive note, I got a picture text from my hubby before I "attempted sleep" (don't sleep when he is gone- it's pretty bad)

I do love making Zach's lunch....I guess he liked it too because he texted me later on about how awesome it was (and truly made my day)

Monday was also Ally's 19th bday...so we had a fun little bday dinner out and then a cake at home

Most of the week after this is a blur...lots of work and stress and back to the workout grind...so happy to pick up Daddy on Wed night...I exhaled and slept for 8 straight hours on Wed night!

Here is my car clock from this morning...just to prove that I did circuit training last night and I was back at the gym by 5:30am this morning...bring it!

and now...breakfast of champions...iced green tea and fresh fruit

A look back on all the things I have been thankful for in 2011 (as documented here)....when looking back, all I can think of is how blessed my family was this year...with health...with prosperity and most of all with answered prayers...God always has a plan

January:

My husband coming home to us safely after a wonderful business trip to Las Vegas...in the midst of a snow storm when most flights were cancelled and delayed at best! (yes prayers work)

My stepson Zack and my stepdaughter Allison and all of the help and support they provided me while Rob was away (especially since it was also tech week for my show and I was at rehearsal every night)

My father-in-law who checked on me constantly and plowed out our driveway after our HUGE snowstorm

Diana starting to ask to go potty more and more and successfully doing so multiple times daily!

My awesome bosses who were flexible with me this week and very supportive of my return to the stage

Not losing power this winter, as of yet...with several MAJOR snowstorms (we lose power when the wind blows the wrong way in Windham yo)

Friday night bliss...first one I have had since Friday November 19th- why? Let's just look at the blackberry (now mind you, I had lots of fun but still, not my Friday night chill with wine, sushi and a chick flick after Diana is in bed and Rob is at his gig!) Humor me peeps: Nov 26th (Thanksgiving weekend in York with the fam), Dec 3rd (Christmas shopping with Monkey), Dec 10th (Cass's Silpada Party), Dec 17th (the end of the Christmas shopping with Monkey), Dec 24th (Christmas Eve- enough said), Dec 31st (New Year's Eve- again enough said), Jan 7th (Zack's basketball game), Jan 14th (opening night of my show!), Jan 21st (had kitten over for dinner and relationship counseling) and this past Frday???? Ahhhh.....spicy tuna roll, Pepperwood Pinot and Love Happens...pure bliss!

Two contract starts this week

Being asked to help manage the campaigns of two friends running for school board...two impressive and bright friends that add so much to our community

Our parents...as always...just a wonderful support system..I know not everyone has this and I never take it for granted

The new judges on American Idol...can I just say how beautiful Jennifer Lopez is...I can't stop staring at her...her skin...her hair...her teeth and then her personality makes her that much more beautiful and then Steven Tyler? I have always been a fan but even more so now when I can see his true passion for music...the chemistry between him and Lopez is infectious..and Randy "Dog" is actually being kinda chill this year...much more appealing

Thanks to my mother for showing me the beauty in life. We had such a wonderful day yesterday celebrating her birthday...shopping..gossiping...like two "school girl." pure bliss

Excellent election results in town- we are getting our permanent kindergarten, our facilities master plan passed which means the improvements will start on all schools in town and Michelle and Stephanie both got elected to school board- hooray! We are in great hands! Thank you to everyone who came out to vote- not nearly enough did but the right people did and they voted the right way!

The cast of The Drowsy Chaperone at WHS for an entertaining evening! Wow- we were impressed- such strong talent at the high school level! Thank you for giving it your all!

It truly makes me laugh so hard...Bambi tried to leave us..not sure where she thought she would find something better but it caused mass chaos...Ally (being 18) took it upon herself to go to the police station...Rob was roaming the neighborhoods...Zack even went into the woods..so scary because we live on a main road but thankful to the woman who picked her up and brought her to the Dog Officer...$40 later she is home...ugh but kinda funny and thankful she is home...when the time is right, want to have the chance to say goodbye :(

Wow! What a week! There were so many emotional highs and lows. I am most grateful that we all, as a family, came out unscathed (well for the most part).

I am thankful for the Windham Daddy Daughter dance...I don't think I have ever seen Diana so happy and excited. (though she kept Rob running around all night...chasing her...he wouldn't have traded it for the world AND Mama had some quality girl time with her BFF at their favorite Windham hangouts)

I am thankful that my stepdaughter Ally is okay. The same night, Rob got the call that Ally had been in a car accident...car is really bad...Ally is ok...Thank GOD

I am thankful for the Jass Brothers. This was Rob's band in the 90's and early 2000's...it is actually how we met...the Jass Brothers, however, finished up about 10 years ago. Once in awhile, we are graced with a special gig. On Saturday night, they came together for Bella who is a little girl in the next town over. Bella got strep throat and the infection went into her bloodstream and she ended up losing all four limbs- every parents' worst fear. The boys came together and it was amazing. When the three of them get together it is pure magic. I was so melancholy. It was a quick one hour set in the middle of a benefit. My old friend John (also a huge Jass fan) took me out for dinner first and then we enjoyed the band. I was very emotional and probably because of my next item.

I am thankful that my husband flew out to New Orleans safely on Sunday and flew back to us safely yesterday (you all know how much I just LOVE flying- tongue in cheek here) He is home safe AND Diana gave him the best welcome I have ever seen...made us all cry and do a group hug in the middle of the airport!

I am thankful that my car only had $300 worth of repairs today needed AND NOT the need for a new transmission

I am thankful for new clients this week...as soon as you fill jobs and help clients, you kinda panic and ask yourself...Oh no! What is next? (on the same note, I am so excited that a special client paid on time and I will be getting my first award for it!)

I am thankful for my stepson Zack, who was truly the man of the house when his dad was gone...he even made dinner for the Monk and him on Monday night...he is one of a kind

I am thankful for the years we have had with Bambi, our beloved bulldog. It is time to put her down. We are so sad but it is selfish to keep her here. She is very sick...she is almost 100% blind and she has lost all control. Saturday will be a day of mixed emotions. She was a great dog and a loyal friend to our family...we will love her forever and never forget her. (the picture attached to this post is from 2007 when I started this blog- Bambi was healthy and 4 years younger- this picture accompanied one of my very first posts)

I am trying to be thankful for the April Fools Snow storm tomorrow? NOT!

Quality swim time with Diana and Ally- love watching sisters having fun

Bambi Breton- as Rob described to us, her passing was so peaceful and she was so happy- it was also confirmed that we were making the right decision when the Vet told Rob she had dropped 10 pounds- so much for a bull dog- still so sad- so much more quiet around here- Bambi was a good friend and never talked back (well almost never)- so grateful for her companionship for 7 years

Mass on Sunday with the whole family and getting our first opportunity to bring up the gifts during the offering (as a family) :)

Griffin Park- forever grateful- and so happy to be able to visit the park weekly again now that the snow has melted!

Circuit Training and the Biggest Loser- in full swing- have completely left my comfort zone- in one week, I feel like my life has already changed so much- oh yeah and the elliptical that I would never touch at the gym (for fear that I would fall off)? I jumped on and haven't looked back- have been on it a few times at circuit and then a few more times at my gym- and I actually LOVE it! :)

Performing my audition piece at our final voice class- sang a ballad (and pretty well- surprised that I did so) in front of the group and got kudos from my director/instructor who as a former professional opera singer- learned a lot from her and thankful to have exercises to practice and improve my voice before future auditions

Awesome mini-fam dinner at The Tuscan Kitchen- you must try the Cappellacci Salad- mixed wild greens, candied pecans, marinated apples, goat cheese and squash filled home made pasta- out of this world! (and Monk gives their pizza two thumbs up!)

The joy Diana is experiencing with her new Dora bike- I am so glad we were able to do this for her- it is the first thing she runs to every day now!

Our new friends from dance class- yes Diana is having fun with her dance class pals but Mama is too- it is so fun meeting moms my age and getting together for play dates!

A FANTASTIC 3 mile run outside with two friends this week...just reminds me how much more fun and encouraging it is to have friends to exercise with AND gets me even more psyched for the 5k we are doing in September at our high school! WOOHOO! CAN'T STOP- WON'T STOP!

Thankful to have this blog as a means to share my gratitude as well as my prayers, thoughts and intentions on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 and always- may all of the families affected by that awful day find some peace and love within themselves and their families this weekend

For the time I got to spend with my Auntie Angie. She passed away on September 11th. My Dad's mom/my Nani Binda died when I was in 4th grade. Her death hit me very hard. From the moment she passed on, however, her sister, "Auntie Angie", stepped in to fill that void. She was a wonderful person. She was dealt a very tough deck- went through so much pain in her lifetime and still always made time for others. Her husband died when they were in their 40's and she was left to raise two children all alone. He was her true love-she never married again. Her daughter, after losing weight and becoming "healthy" dropped dead in step aerobics class on the same day that her father had passed and at the same age- 42. Horrific. My Aunt carried on. She raised her grandchildren after that and was always a support to all of us. The moment that stands out above all for me though was when I walked into my wedding shower (for my first wedding)....I had hugged my mom and soon to be mother-in-law and then made my way to the back of the room where my bridesmaids were. My Nani (my mom's mom) came up to hug me and congratulate me and then without missing a beat, Auntie called "Holly!" and she got up to hug me and to fill in for my Nani (my dad's mom)...I still well up every time I think about it...she truly looked at us like her grandkids and I will never forget it. Her funeral is tomorrow and her granddaughter Deanna asked me to do a reading. I was so touched and I guess I didn't realize I was that important to her. I will tell you, however, I feel so important and loved at this very moment. I am so so thankful to have had her as my aunt.

Although the rest of thanks this week will pale in comparison to Auntie, I must continue to give thanks for my everyday gifts.

I am thankful that I was able to complete a 5K and not any regular 5k- a torturous run, through a cross country trail of several hills, ditches, etc....it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do physically (outside of giving birth) and I am proud...so thankful for my running partners who also never left my side.

I am thankful for a successful football parents tailgating party. Although the Boosters might put an end to our football fun, we had a blast and I am thankful we got to do it at least once.

I am thankful for my daughter's happiness while apple picking...I love watching her when she squeals with delight.

I am so thankful for feeling appreciated at work. I am so thankful that I am able to work two days from home so I can raise my daughter and yet I am trusted to do my thing and run a business and the success is showing in the numbers. I don't think I can ever explain how lucky I feel and how grateful I truly am. I am busting at the seems with pride, happiness and gratitude.
A fun trip to Fall Mountain...never had to drive 2 hours for one of the kids' sporting events but the JAGS made it so worthwhile...Rob and I enjoyed a scorpion bowl and some chinese on the way up in Claremont...some of the parents agreed that we need to make that a group party next time- check!

October:

My daughter's love of Halloween and being able to share in her excitement and live through the eyes of a child

Being able to scare her (I know it sounds twisted but hear be out) with the threat of calling the police- Diana is not scared of anything-she is a fearless child UNLESS you bring the police up- if she thinks you are going to call them if she is doing something bad or if she hears a siren in the distance and knows she is not listening, she straightens right up and gets in the zone...what makes this even more funny is that Rob and Zack have a police siren app on their iPhones and play it and that is when she is really scared into doing the right thing- twisted but hysterical and grateful we have something to keep her on the right path (10% of the time anyway)

For the great team my business partner and I have put together- they make it so fun to go to work and I love looking at the young girls with their whole lives in front of them and remembering when I was their age trying to impress my bosses- they are keeping me young!

For the power of prayer and the fact that we are here- looking back to a year ago, I am so grateful for where we are today and that we have pulled through some of our toughest days

for quality min-fam time....I love when Diana has fun..nothing like watching her happiness

For being able to live vicariously through Diana...love getting excited again about things like Halloween because she experiences so much excitement and joy...there is nothing like it...here she is with her dance pals during Halloween Costume Day!

and for carving jack-o-lanterns...one of my favorite past-times (and thankful I have the best sport of a husband who gets into everything to make me happy!)

for being able to share the WHS football experience with my parents....such a great time!

for the return of great workouts! WOOHOO!

for new friends at work...we have such a great group and I am thankful for the ability to build great teams! We celebrated hitting some hefty numbers last night at The Venetian Moon- wonderful!

for my step kids and the relationships I have with them...it has not always been easy but I am so proud of the love and trust we have built...so much work but oh so worth it...they are all so special in their own ways and I am grateful I can be a big part of their lives

Another Spectacular Christmas

Monkey was so excited to wake up to "more presents from Santa?!"

Her big gift was a portable DVD player with a collection of 12 classic Disney movies

and then the rest of the kiddos joined us and the opening frenzy began!

When Grammy and Papa arrived, it was another opening frenzy (overboard again!)

and then Mimi and Papa and Aaron arrived and our group was complete!

We started with Christmas cocktails, hot crab dip and filets wrapped in bacon

and then we enjoyed a traditional Italian Christmas Dinner

Our first course was gnocchis that my parents got at Bella in Medford

After that is was Pork Crown Roast, Cornbread and Black Cherry Stuffing, Grammy's Scalloped Potatoes, Green Beens with Bacon and Shallots, Salad and Parker House Rolls

After the feeding frenzy and the last guest had left...we settled in for one more showing of Christmas Vacation...we just can't get enough of that movie!

Christmas Eve 2011

It was a jam packed...joy filled Christmas Eve for our family...we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it with those we love most

We started the day by surprising Grammy and Papa with one of Mama's special Ricotta Orange Poundcakes...here is their old school bay window..decorated with the manger and a tree (these figurines have been used by the Bretons for three generations)

Then we visited the cemeteries to visit our closest loved ones who have passed...we brought holiday plants...we started in Chelmsford where both of Rob's sets of grandparents are buried

Then we headed to Wakefield to visit Anissa, Winchester to visit Nani and Papa and then Malden to visit Nani and Papa, Auntie Angie and Uncle Dominic and Gramma and Grampa

After that, we went to Mum and Dad's for a spectacular lunch including lobster salad, mushroom and Gruyere bruschetta and holiday kiss cocktails...fantabulous..nothing less expected with my mother!

I even got to help mum make Zeppolis and although she wasn't crazy about them, I thought they were great, just like Nani's

Then it was time for mass at St. Pat's..we went an hour early to get seats! (crazy are the Christmas crowds- one of my pet peeves as many of you know)

After mass, we came back to discover that Santa had stopped at Mimi and Papa's...Miss Diana was out of her mind and tore open presents faster than a bolt of lightening...too funny!

(Santa at Mimi and Papa's went way overboard- classic) ;)

Miss Diana got the Dora Fairy Doll, Angelina Ballerina, Cheerleader Barbie, some lovely outfits and an easel!

Next stop? Auntie Peggy's for the "Festival of Fishes"

Seems like the marshmallow vodka trend has even spread to my relatives...Uncle Bill was prepared and served up some great cocktails...then we indulged in shrimp, crab, baked stuffed shrimp, Aili oili, vinegar peppers, bouillabaisse, scallops, clams casino (two ways) and baked sole.

Diana had a blast with her cousins but was out of control (shocker)...so we jetted out a bit early to get her to bed!

Here is what my week looked like through the eyes of my I-phone :)

Epic Company Christmas Party...starting with the limo that picked up my staff...at each of their individual homes!

We enjoyed an outstanding meal at Strega- Waterfront Boston

and then dessert at Cafe Pompei in the North End (love how I cut off the sign)

I feel like I lived in Boston last weekend because first thing Saturday morning we headed right back

Grabbed a quick breakfast at Joe's on Newbury because we had some time to kill

and then it was photo shoot time for Miss Diana at her new modeling agency...what an awesome and fun experience for her and us!

All week I felt like I raced around to continue shopping and wrapping and giving and doing everything I could to spread Christmas joy...one thing that made me happy this week was that Ally was home...we enjoyed some family dinners with friends at our home all weekend and on Tuesday night, we grabbed some sushi...all the stocking stuffers and got our shopping done for Ally's boyfriend

Cass and I discovered Michael Sullberg Cabernet this week...this week should go down in history because I like this wine as much if not more than J. Lohr and that is a big deal ;)

Last night, Mum and I were able to enjoy one of our favorite Christmas traditions again and that is to go into Boston and stay overnight. We had a great time staying at the Marriott Long Wharf...then dining at Del Frisco's and then enjoying a night cap at Sel de la Ter on the waterfront

This morning, on our way home, we tried to hit the legendary bakery called Lyndell's in Somerville...just wasn't worth the wait in line though...too much work still to be done professionally and personally! (I am sure their goodies are just wonderful but we will have to see some other time!)

The Layaway Angels

Some angels have been visiting Kmart stores across the country and paying off people's layaways. I saw the story on the news a few mornings ago and watched people's reactions... it is almost like the angels knew what people to help as well...one woman was buying coats for her children..her and her little girl immediately started crying and she explained after that this generous gift came at just the right time as she has two kids in college and both of the family's cars had broken down.

This act of random kindness has completely inspired me. Will it inspire you? It does not have to be much but it can truly change someone's Christmas for the better.

This generosity and pure magic is spreading throughout KMarts and now Walmarts across the country.

I am going to finish my Favorite Things List for 2011 with this post. I hope it sticks. It truly became my favorite thing this Christmas.

Please take this post and act to help someone.

Our family was truly in a tough place last year and I will never forget the support we received from family and friends....through all the stress and uncertainty last year, it still became one of the most magical Christmases ever.

This year we have been in such a great place so my husband and I have tried to give back every week of this holiday season. We hope that we did make a difference in some people's lives. We will now be paying a visit to KMart to squeeze in one more act of kindness in 2011. Won't you join us?

The Advent Wreath

As with many long-standing customs, the origins of the Advent wreath are somewhat debated. Some histories of the advent wreath say that Christians simply adapted an even earlier custom from pre-Christian Germanic tribes. Supposedly, then, these pagan people tried to break the darkness of winter with candles and invoke the sun god to return with the warmth and light of spring. In addition, the evergreen wreath would remind them that there is still life and the circle of time would again come back to spring.

According to this viewpoint, Christians later placed new and Biblical meaning to the old customs. Now the candles pointed to Jesus, the Light of the world (John 3:17-21.) The evergreen wreath now reminded believers that our Savior God grants new and everlasting life in Jesus. The wreath was also a symbol of victory, for a garland wreath was often placed on victors in contests or conquests. So naturally, a Christian can think of the crown of life that Jesus has won for us. The four candles in an Advent wreath would then emphasize the four week period of penitence and preparation during Advent, as we eagerly await the coming of the Light of the world to bring new life and hope.

The advent wreath became quite popular in homes in post-Reformation Germany. It seems pretty certain that in many German homes families had a custom of lighting four candles during advent, candles placed in a wreath of evergreens. When these candles were lit, Scripture and prayer was part of the custom and the family devotion time was a time of instructing the children about Christ’s coming. Later, the custom crossed over different denominational lines and other faith traditions adapted its use. Today, you can find Advent wreathes in many Protestant and Roman Catholic churches.

THE MEANING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Most Advent wreaths use three colors – purple, pink, and white. However, some may use blue in place of the purple.

1st CANDLE – (purple) THE PROPHECY CANDLE or CANDLE OF HOPE – We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. “And again, Isaiah says, ‘The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.’ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:12-13)
2nd CANDLE – (purple) THE BETHLEHEM CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF PREPARATION – God kept his promise of a Savior who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to “get ready”. Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD! “As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: ‘A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.‘ (Luke 3:4-6)
3rd CANDLE – (pink) THE SHEPHERD CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF JOY – The angels sang a message of JOY! “…and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” (Luke 2:7-15)
4th CANDLE – (purple) THE ANGEL CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF LOVE – The angles announced the good news of a Savior. God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us! “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17)
5th CANDLE – (white) “CHRIST CANDLE” – The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth! “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!‘” (John 1:29)
“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.’ In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’ ‘How can a man be born when he is old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.‘” (John 3:1-8)

Target's Pastel Christmas Decorations

It does not surprise me that Target is making its 2nd appearance on my favorite things list...I love their funky decorations...especially their pastel wreath and matching table top trees. My friend Heather decorated her home with these treats and it looks just bedazzling...love!

Christmas with Elisa and Fam

I have to say ...even I was impressed with myself today...I strived to design an amazing menu and did just that

I also successfully cooked my first standing beef rib roast...came out great!

We hosted my business partner Elisa and her family and had a great time!

This is the beginning of another wonderful new Christmas tradition!

First we started with individual Smoked Seafood Cocktails

and then dinner consisted of the roast along with a ciabatta stuffing with chestnuts and pancetta, garlic mashed potatoes, green beens with shallots, salad and ciabatta

For dessert, I made Mel's Chocolate Peppermint Ice Cream Cake...delish!

After we devoured our meals...we exchanged gifts! Diana was so excited to get a sequin skirt and PINK...boy does Elisa know her!

Wirlwhind weekend...hope you all got into the holiday spirit...we sure did!

Ice Skating

We did this last year with Diana...and the most magical part of it all was skating in Boston...at Frog Pond...right before Christmas...nothing like it

We plan on returning with all of the kiddos this year!

I don't know what has gotten in to me this year but I am truly embracing winter and the cold..it may have something to do with the cute coats and boots and winter accessories out there but I really feel like I have to embrace all seasons because we live in New England and life can be more enjoyable if you try see the good in things...
